19:00 Doors 19:30 The Wind Rises (2014)
Together with Kaboom Animation Festival, we are bringing the best anime to the big screen! This weekend, we're doing a special Studio Ghibli weekender, in celebration of the new film 'The Boy and the Heron'. We will screen no fewer than ten films by director Hayao Miyazaki, including a unique preview of his latest. Come and enjoy the best Ghibli together on the big screen!
The Wind Rises was originally thought to be Miyazaki''s last film and a poignant farewell from him, exploring the life of Jiro Horikoshi, a designer of World War II fighter planes. Unlike Miyazaki's typical fantasy fare, this film is based on a true story, offering a different perspective on creativity, ambition, and the impact of one's work on the world. The animation is breathtaking, with meticulous attention to detail in capturing the beauty of flight. The narrative gracefully navigates the complexities of love, dreams, and the moral dilemmas tied to innovation in wartime. This film is an introspective journey that showcases the director's versatility and storytelling prowess beyond the realms of fantasy.
Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
