18:30 Doors 19:00 The Boy and the Heron (2023)
Together with Kaboom Animation Festival, we are bringing the best anime to the big screen! This weekend, we're doing a special Studio Ghibli weekender, in celebration of the new film 'The Boy and the Heron'. We will screen no fewer than ten films by director Hayao Miyazaki, including a unique preview of his latest. Come and enjoy the best Ghibli together on the big screen!
The Boy and the Heron is about a boy who embarks on a journey to a fantastical world in which he meets extraordinary people and creatures that play a large role in his own development. The film fits in perfectly with the auteur cinema of Miyazaki. Recognizable by its unique animation style, the wonderful worlds and the touching story, this film is unmistakably the work of the great master of the animation world. Like in many of his works, the fascination with airplanes, which stems from Miyazaki's own childhood, can also be found in The Boy and the Heron. Additionally, there are many more autobiographical elements in the film, like the relationship that the main character Mahito has with his parents and the moving to the countryside due to the war. After The Wind Rises (2014) this is truly Miyazaki's last long animation, so come along, one last time, for a grand adventure!
Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
