20:00 Doors 20:30 Rafiki (2018)
Especially for Pride, a couple of guest curators of other programmes in Melkweg have selected an inspiring film, with a short introduction. Naomie Pieter chooses Wanuri Kahiu's Rafiki from 2018, before Pon di Pride.
"Good Kenyan girls become good Kenyan wives", but Kena and Ziki have very different plans. Despite the political rivalry between their families, their friendship endures. They support each other in pursuing their dreams in a conservative world. When love blossoms between the two girls, the friends are faced with a choice: do they choose their happiness or their safety? The film Rafiki premiered at Cannes and its release was banned in conservative Kenya. It managed, after much campaigning, to screen the film in cinemas for a week.
Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
