19:30 Doors 20:00 Introduction Carmen van Mulier 20:30 Poesía Sin Fin (2016)

Together with Heat, an agency representing filmmakers, we present a bi-monthly film night curated by passionate creators from their roster for an evening of connection and inspiration. Each edition features a unique host and inspiring guests; they select a main film that shows what they stand for and motivates them within their creative field. And they take you on a two-hour journey into their vision. This edition is hosted by Carmen van Mulier, with the main film Poesía Sin Fin.

Through renowned father of the midnight movies Alejandro Jodorowsky’s intensely personal lens, this autobiographical film tells the story of his years spent as an aspiring poet in Chile in the 1940’s. Against the wishes of his authoritarian father, the 20 year old Jodorowsky leaves home to pursue his dream of becoming a poet, and is introduced into the bohemian and artistic inner circle of Santiago where he meets Enrique Lihn, Stella Diaz Varín, Nicanor Parra, all unknown at the time, but who would later become driving forces of twentieth century Hispanic literature.

Living with these inspirational artists, Jodorowsky’s exploration of his inner feelings takes him on a journey of sensual experimentation leading him to realize his innermost desires and passions. Continuing the autobiographical story, he began in The Dance of Reality, Endless Poetry is an ode to the quest for beauty and inner truth, as a universal force capable of changing one’s life forever, written by a man who has dedicated his existence to creating spiritual and artistic awareness, told through Jodorowsky’s unique surreal and psychedelic visual language.

Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.

This evening has been curated by actress, theatre producer and singer Carmen van Mulier, who will do an introduction before the film:

"My first introduction to Jodorowsky was The Holy Mountain. A friend had notified me about the film, as it was said to be the sickest film ever made and I had to see it. He was right. In the years after, I watched Jodorowsky's other films, including eventually Poesia Sin Fin, which for me surpassed everything else. His work is a genre in its own right, which has not left me since I first saw it. Whether it is the absurd characters, the symbolism, the spirituality, the colours, the surreal set design, the dreams or the poetry, I devour it all and it is a great source of inspiration in everything I make."
