21:15 Doors 21:30 Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (1984)
Together with Kaboom Animation Festival, we are bringing the best anime to the big screen! This weekend, we're doing a special Studio Ghibli weekender, in celebration of the new film 'The Boy and the Heron'. We will screen no fewer than ten films by director Hayao Miyazaki, including a unique preview of his latest. Come and enjoy the best Ghibli together on the big screen!
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is Miyazaki's first feature length animation and was made in 1984. The story takes place in a post-apocalyptic world in which a large part of the ocean has dried out, where poisonous forests have made the landscape unliveable and where the Ohm live, large but benign creatures that might form a considerable danger to humankind. The film is very aware of its situatedness in relation to nature and mankind in times of war. Nausicaä's style sets the tone for later Ghibli films and sets the bar high in terms of characters, plot and aesthetics. The film is much inspired by cartoons and sci-fi films of the previous century, but also by Greek mythology and Japanese folklore. Although Miyazaki himself had a couple of critical remarks regarding the production and final result, it is fan favourite and considered a true classic.
Melkweg often hosts different types of programmes at the same time, such as concerts, club nights and films. Please note that there may occasionally be some noise pollution from other programmes during the screening.
