MILK SOLO: Maarten Nico

MILK

Artist Maarten Nico presents artworks that revolve around the Peter Pan Syndrome. This is a syndrome in which grown-ups struggle with the idea of growing up. Just like in the story of Peter Pan, they try to escape and make their way to Neverland.

In his daily life, Maarten Nico also longs for a childlike perspective with which he can approach the world around him. A view in which everything is possible and nothing is set in stone. According to the artist, the Peter Pan Syndrome can go hand in hand with an "adult life." Through his art, he invites the viewer to embrace their inner child and emphasizes on challenging the status quo.

The Milk Solo ‘Lurking Neverland’ showcases new works inspired by Maarten Nico's daydreams. These daydreams occur in adult situations, such as doing chores around the house, whilst in his thoughts he’s already outside playing basketball on a sunny court downtown. Through this, Maarten accidentally and playfully discovered a new artistic discipline for himself: ‘Plasterboard Mosaics.’ For the exhibition at Milk, he is creating a new installation-like sculpture, where mosaics merge with various building materials and colorful plasterboards.

This exhibition is supported by the Mondriaan Fund and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts.
