Bass Is The Place: Exploring Caribbean Influence in Modern Sound

In this special event at ADE, Live at the BBQ invites you to dive deep into the lasting influence of Caribbean sound system culture on contemporary music production. This conversation will explore how sound system roots have shaped modern music, from reggae and dub to today’s innovative approaches.

The event kicks off with a screening of Lover’s Rock by acclaimed filmmaker Steve McQueen, part of his “Small Axe” anthology. The film captures the energy of a vibrant house party in 1980s West London, set to the sounds of reggae, dub and Lover’s Rock, a genre that blossomed out of Caribbean communities in the UK.

Following the screening, join legendary producer Adrian Sherwood and emerging artist Rozaly for an in-depth panel discussion.

    • Adrian Sherwood is a pioneering producer, known for his groundbreaking work in dub and reggae with his label On-U Sound, and collaborations with a range of artists from Lee “Scratch” Perry to Depeche Mode. His contributions to the evolution of sound system culture in both the UK and internationally are vast.
    • Rozaly is a dynamic and versatile artist, whose work as a DJ and producer is rooted in Caribbean rhythms while exploring the fringes of electronic and experimental sounds. He brings a fresh perspective to the dialogue around sound system culture and its enduring legacy.
    • The panel will be moderated by Mijke Hurkx from Loch Inn, known for her deep knowledge and experience in hosting music-centric discussions. Together, they will explore how Caribbean sound system culture continues to influence modern music production and shape today’s soundscapes.
