Opening: 16:00 - 19:00
On Saturday afternoon 2 December from 16:00 onwards, the exhibition Gathering Moss by Magnus Monfeldt (Avesta, 1973) and Jonas Ohlsson (Örebro, 1967) will open at Melkweg Expo. This installation explores various aspects of fatherhood from the perspective of two artists with Swedish roots. It delves into both the joy and hope, as well as the trials and fears that are inherently connected to fatherhood. This marks the second exhibition by Monfeldt and Ohlsson, who previously exhibited together at Plan B Amsterdam in 2018, as part of an ongoing collaboration on projects related to fatherhood and art creation.
The title of the exhibition originates from the old saying, "A rolling stone gathers no moss," which implies that those who constantly move and do not commit to a place, profession, or other people will achieve little. Monfeldt and Ohlsson have transitioned from romanticized years filled with wild experiments, boundless travels, and late nights to a life of structure and routine, early evenings and mornings, yoga sessions, and toddler soccer training.
The central component of the exhibition is a recently completed, never-before-seen 30-minute film installation in which their own children and themselves are the protagonists. In this film, various aspects of life, as well as perspectives on parenthood and the definition of masculinity, are examined in different settings. Additionally, the entire space features drawings, collages, and sculptural elements, as well as a previous video work by the duo from 2018.
To broaden their own perspectives and reinforce the content of their project, they drew inspiration from the wise words of many female writers. Insights from authors such as bell hooks, Maggie Nelson, and Naomi Klein have collectively formed the framework for their ongoing redefinition of male parenthood. Monfeldt and Ohlsson aim to challenge outdated forms of masculinity, gender biases, and patriarchy.
In the words of Monfeldt and Ohlsson: "It is never too late to change, to educate yourself, and to relearn how to walk, talk, and love on this planet."
Gathering Moss is on view at Melkweg Expo from 2 to 31 December.
This exhibition is made possible by the Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst (AFK).
