World-famous Dutch saxophonist Candy Dulfer has a close relationship with her parents. Her father Hans, himself a respected jazz saxophonist, and mother Inge have always played a major role in her career, both musically and professionally. Candy has performed with superstars such as Prince, David Stewart, Van Morrison and Pink Floyd. But when the pandemic breaks out and she can no longer perform, Candy has to fight to keep her head above water. She worries about her frail parents, who are coming of age, and will also be unable to pass on the Dulfer name due to unwanted childlessness. However, Candy does not give up and looks for new opportunities to keep making music and working on a new album. Candy is an intimate portrait of an independent artist, daughter and bonus mother reinventing herself in difficult times.
Before the film Dutch saxophonist Kika Sprangers will play a couple of songs. Her music balances on a fine line between a person’s vulnerability and strength. A vision to combine the two, shared musically through a love for unorthodox instrumentation and tension arcs meant for symphonic passages or a heavy silence. Her new quintet album Mind’s Eye is an ode to imagination.
