18:30 Doors 20:00 ADE Opening Concert: 50 Years of Dilla
For the eigth year in a row, the world-renowned Metropole Orkest provides the opening concert of the Amsterdam Dance Event at Melkweg. This year, in collaboration with multi-instrumentalist and composer Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, they present a special tribute to J Dilla, one of the most admired and influential hip-hop producers of the 2000s, who left a strong mark on contemporary electronic music with his inventive beats.
The versatile Miguel Atwood-Ferguson has contributed to more than 600 albums, films and TV shows, collaborating with a wide range of artists. Among them are such names as Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Chaka Khan, Erykah Badu, Thundercat, and many others. Dilla's work inspired Miguel and producer Carlos Nino to create "Suite For Ma Dukes. What began as a 4-track EP in 2009 grew into a series of exciting live shows, and where the music was performed by an ensemble with varying lineups.
J Dilla would have turned 50 this year, and given his major influence on electronic music, the show is coming to ADE and will be performed by Metropole Orkest for the first time. Dilla's mother, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, will join Miguel Atwood-Ferguson to open the concert, and as a special guest at ADE's conference program.
