Above and Beyond: The Global Rise of Afro House (2022)

Together with Africadelic we will host the Dutch premiere of Above and Beyond: The Global Rise of Afro House during ADE2023! This music documentary traces the origins of Afro house and explores the past, present and future of this global network of musicians. Featuring Osunlade, Louie, Anané Vega and many others. In addition, we will be screening the short film Against All Odds from Thok Koang Thor, about refugee-turned-dj Anita who returns to the Kakuma refugee camp where she once lived Prior to the film, there will also be a session in Melkweg Cinema by music producer and researcher Josephine Zwaan about what African philosophy can teach us about electronic music.

Africadelic is an annual festival on and around International Africa Day (May 25) celebrating the creativity, diversity and resilience of Africa. The Africadelic Festival is an ode to the African continent and its worldwide diaspora, and features a showcase of the cultural riches and the impacts that Afrodescendants, i.e. people of African descent, have on global culture and society. From May 24-31, 2023, the festival offered another week full of concerts, films, and talks. In addition to the festival, Africadelic also organizes events throughout the year, including this special ADE screening of Above and Beyond: The Global Rise of Afro House!
